Prof S. Kumar graduated in Architecture from JNTU, took his Post – Graduate Degree in Planning from CEPT, Ahmadabad and his Doctoral Degree in Architecture from JNAFA University. He joined as faculty in the Department of Architecture and organized various events, such as the seminars on Passive and Low energy Architecture.

From September 2004 to April 2011, he functioned as the Head, Department of Urban and Regional Planning. During this period he conducted several seminars/workshops and also published his work. The GIS laboratory was setup and a two week Staff Development Programme on “Emerging Trends in Planning Education” was organized. The NOSPLAN event was also hosted by SPA, JNTU bringing together students from various planning schools in the country. He also worked in various capacities including Regional Coordinator for EAMCET - 2010 and 2011 for the regional centre, Hyderabad – VI.

He has lectured at other institutions for instance Engineering Staff College of India and Dr. MCR Human Resource Development Institute of Andhra Pradesh. He has also been invited to be an expert for Consultation Workshops such as the Environmental Building Regulations and Guidelines and Preparation of Training Modules for Housing Programmes.

He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Studies in Urban and Regional Planning. He visited Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany as part of the Academic Exchange Programme and also participated in the Global Workshop “Strengthening Climate Change in Urban Education” at Bonn, Germany.
